Today Motorola unveiled its Moto G smartphone, which is related to the Moto X in many ways, but very different in others. I had the chance to try out the Moto G in person at Motorola's Canadian HQ in Toronto, and in many ways, it's a very impressive device. In others, however, it still reveals its cost consciousness.

One of the first things I noticed was that the phone feels a little chubby. It's relatively thick compared to premium smartphones like the Moto X or the Nexus 5, but that's to be expected considering the screen it's packing and the price. Display tech costs a lot when you're trying to reduce thickness, less so when you're unconcerned on that score.

People all around the world want to be a part of the mobile Internet so they can access the world’s information, share, and connect with the things that matter to them. But the smartphone industry has relegated hundreds of millions of smartphone buyers to second-class status, preventing them from experiencing the mobile Internet at its best.

That’s because price-conscious consumers who don’t want to pay $600 or more for high-end smartphones have been left with two bad options. The first is to buy cheap, new smartphones made with second-rate technology that don’t do justice to modern apps and experiences like navigation, video chat and games. The second is to buy “low cost” versions of premium products that were released two or three years ago and are already obsolete.

We think there should be a better option. Everybody deserves to be on the mobile Internet, and price shouldn’t stand in the way of anyone having a truly good smartphone to get them there.

Kyocera recently launched the Hydro XTRM with MetroPCS and as of today, there is word of the durable and waterproof handset coming to another US carrier. This latest is T-Mobile, though, this time around the Hydro XTRM will only be available for business customers. Pricing has yet to be announced, however Kyocera and T-Mobile have said the handset will be available beginning on November 20th.

The Hydro XTRM feature set includes a 4-inch (800 x 480) impact-resistant display, dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, 2000 mAh battery, 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and 4G LTE connectivity. There will also be Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The key though is in the casing and the durability of the phone and to that point we look towards the IP57 and Military Standard 810G ratings.

Motorola officially announced the Moto G earlier this morning. While there wasn’t much in the way of surprises given all the earlier leaks and rumors, the confirmation is welcomed. Perhaps more important though, Motorola is now offering two options to consider — the Moto G and/or the Moto X. As usual, any purchase decision will come down to individual preferences, however we can break down the specs of each device.

Beginning first with the Moto G and we see things kicking off with Android 4.3, a 4.5-inch display and Qualcomm Snapdragon 400

Retailers everywhere have stopped selling the new HP Chromebook 11, effective immediately. Best Buy store managers were sent a memo which read, in part, “Stores should stop selling the HP Chromebook 11 effective immediately”. This removal from the retail space is widespread, with Amazon and other retailers also pulling the item from their product listings.

The device is also gone from the Play Store devices page. The Best Buy memo notes that all stock should be pulled, and stored in a secure location in their warehouse. We’ve not heard of any issue with malfunction, or any type of fires starting with the device, so this is all very curious. Amazon’s listing notes the device is not available directly because “customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it’s described here.”

So many thoughts to be thunk about the Moto G. Relatively unimpressive specs — save for that price. Not quite a Moto X, but will that matter to most folks in this target market? And will such a low cost to consumers — under $200, off contract and unlocked — finally spur some sort of change in the industry?

Vine is now available to download for Nokia Lumia smartphones running Windows Phone 8.

As part of the Twitter family, Vine enables you to create short, looping videos that you can share with the world on Vine and through Twitter and Facebook.

Each video you create is the shortened form of something larger – a maximum of six seconds.

Creating short movies might seem like a challenge, but the Vine camera and community encourage people to bring out their creative side.

Time-lapse videos are one way to bring a unique vision to life. In fact, it’s possible to get 140 taps (stops/starts) into any one Vine video, achieving almost 24 frames per second.

Approximately 314 smartphones are stolen in London every day, according to the Metropolitan Police.

While in 2011 Americans lost 30 billion dollars worth of mobile devices. These facts speak for themselves. Losing your mobile or having it stolen is, unfortunately, a common occurrence for many, many people. Question is, what can you do about it? To answer this and more, we hooked up with a man who deals with disasters like this all the time, Nokia Care aficionado and Community Manager, Wayne Spillett. Here’s his priceless advice.

Has anyone seen my phone?

Every year, millions of mobile phones go missing, either the owner inadvertently forgot where they left it or it was stolen. We rely so much on our phones these days, not only do they keep us in touch with the world around us but they also store immense amount of information that we use regularly, so we really can feel naked if we don’t have our phone with us!

Vodafone Gets Own-Branded Smartphone, The Smart 4G

I guess it does make perfect sense for Vodafone to come up with its very own branded smartphone, and the Vodafone Smart 4G would be their first attempt. Using the services of Coolpad from China to manufacture the Vodafone Smart 4G, this is no high end device, but it will be the first from Vodafone to feature LTE connectivity while carrying the Vodafone brand.

Over the last six months, our MAKEwithMOTO team took Sticky, a truck wrapped entirely in velcro and filled with rooted, hackable Motorola smartphones and high-end 3D printing equipment, across the country for a series of make-a-thons. On that trip we saw the first signs of a new, open hardware ecosystem made possible by advances in additive manufacturing and access to the powerful computational capabilities of modern smartphones. These included new devices and applications that we could never have imagined from inside our own labs. Open fuels innovation. See some examples here, here, and here.

After the trip, we asked ourselves, how do we bring the benefits of an open hardware ecosystem to 6 billion people?
Meet Ara.

Goodbye Sticky. Hello Ara.

LG, along with M&C Saatchi have come up with a rather interesting advertising campaign. LG is using this to promote the G2 smartphone and has it running in Sweden. While that means a vast amount may never see these ads in person, they are adding a nice spin on the regular competition bash.

You see, these ads are recognizing and targeting other manufacturer handsets. For example, those surfing with a Galaxy S 4 would see any ad that makes fun of the processor. Alternatively, those carrying an HTC One would see something regarding battery life and those carrying an iPhone would see something regarding the size of the display.

The option to turn off BlinkFeed is good to have — but you'll be missing out on a great feature

One of the more radical changes HTC brought in its Sense 5 user interface was the addition of BlinkFeed, a somewhat customizable news reader built into your home screens. In fact, it was meant to serve as your home screen, showing you the latest from your favorite news sources, Facebook and Twitter.
