It’s a rare employer these days that expects workers to stay consistently at one desk, in one office: travel and flexible working practices are the order of the day.

No longer does the word ‘workplace’ designate a cubicle: instead, it implies a state of readiness for a mobile workforce that is expected to spring into action any time, any place… at home, on a train or at a hotel, on a plane or in an airport, or at your company’s other offices. To make yourself ready for these situations, then, you’ve got to think tools: which apps can best facilitate your transition into mobile working? Here’s a few to get you started….

HTC Droid DNA Set To Receive Android 4.4.2 KitKat Update

There has been a whole lot of focus on the recent introduction of the HTC One (M8), which is definitely a leg up on its predecessor, the HTC One (M7). Well, while the latest Android-powered flagship from HTC will arrive with Google’s Android KitKat operating system version, where HTC Droid DNA, one of the older smartphones around from the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer, will soon be on the receiving end of a spanking new Android 4.4.2 KitKat update

T-Mobile is at it again with another "promo" that will surely ruffle BlackBerry's feathers once more. This time, however, the US carrier is encouraging its BlackBerry-toting subscribers to switch not to an iPhone but to any Samsung smartphone.

In exchange for jumping to a Galaxy S5 or a Galaxy Note 3 or any of Samsung's other Android devices, T-Mobile will be giving $200 worth of gift cards. But if you are not a fan of the Korean manufacturer's plastic lineup, you can still avail of a lower $100 trade by switching to any smartphone that isn't a BlackBerry. Wherever you go, there is something in store as long as you denounce your allegiance to BlackBerry.

Tinkerers and modders who desire the Galaxy S5 for its hardware but with very little interest in Samsung's bloatware now have a fighting chance. The latest 2.7 version of the Team Win Recovery Project, better known as TWRP, is now available for Galaxy S5 devices of the "klte" variant.

TWRP rose through the ranks at a time when Clockwork Recovery or CWM was seemingly stagnating in terms of new features, primary among them being the lack of a touch-based interface. Although Koushik "Koush" Dutta is back to developing CWM, he has also signified that he doesn't really want to take CWM beyond the simple and focused recovery that it is. This leaves TWRP a bigger room to grow.

Vivo XShot Passes 40k AnTuTu Mark

There is always a first time for everything, so this week marks the first smartphone in the world that will break the 40,000 barrier in the AnTuTu benchmark, and it is none other than the Vivo XShot that has the honor of doing so. One of the closer rivals in recent times where benchmark reading is concerned would be the OnePlus One, where that model touched the 38,000 mark. Well, the Vivo XShot edged past the barrier by hitting 40,023, which also means it has overtaken the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the Sony Xperia Z Ultra along the way.

Nexus 8 By HTC?

Could HTC be the ones behind the upcoming Nexus 8 tablet from Google? Apparently so, as there are signs from “upstream supply chain” sources that point to the Taiwanese company working on the next generation Nexus tablet. Granted, HTC has not been doing too well lately, despite having released fine smartphones in the mold of the HTC One (both the M7 and M8 versions). While Google was said to have approached HTC before Asus for the Nexus 7, it seemed that HTC was too busy back then, where in hindsight, it might have helped ease HTC’s bottom line today.

Samsung Building Fire Caused Samsung.com Website To Go Down

If you happen to be using a Samsung device earlier this morning, you might have received some error messages, as well as being unable to log on to Samsung.com. There is a very good reason for that, which is also a reminder to those of us who are so engrossed in the virtual world, that we are not quite sure what to make of the corporeal world anymore. Apparently, the Samsung SDS building located in Gwacheon, South Korea, saw its fourth floor catch fire, knocking off the Samsung.com website along the way.

We asked Jussi Nevanlinna, VP for Mobile Phone marketing, some of your questions about the new Nokia X family, why it’s important for Nokia and why customers will be delighted with the phones.

First of all, why now? Why is the timing now right for an Android-based smartphone from Nokia?

There are a couple of answers to that question.

The newest Galaxy devices, to include the Galaxy S5 and Gear Fit, as well as the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are the focus with Samsung here in Barcelona. Of course, there is much more here on display at the Samsung booth. We happened to be in discovery and wandering mode, and happened upon the Galaxy S4 Black Edition, which was unveiled earlier in the month.

There really isn't all that much to say about the Black Edition GS4. After all, the specs should be familiar at this point. What is different here is the new look. Well, more specifically, this is a new look for the Galaxy S4, but an old look for the Galaxy Note 3. This GS4 has the faux leather back with faux stitching we saw announced with the Note 3.

Omate is here at Mobile World Congress showing a new model, as well as some new colors. This latest is the TrueSmart Elegance edition and it was introduced to address on issue in particular -- the weight of the watch. We mentioned in our initial hands-on how the TrueSmart initially felt heavy, and while we were able to get used to it, those going with the Elegance model shouldn't have that to worry about at all.

We were told the TrueSmart Elegance edition watch is 30 percent lighter (as compared to the existing model). We wouldn't necessarily think of this as the second-generation model, however the difference in weight comes due to the difference in material. The Elegance edition is made of aluminum, versus the stainless steel in the original model. And as you'll see in the image gallery -- there is a new color, pink.

HTC One wins GSMA's top smartphone of the year at Mobile World Congress

LG honored for its innovation

Mobile World Congress

We're all patiently awaiting HTC's March 25 events in London and New York, where it's all but official that we'll get a new version of one of our favorite smartphones of the past year. (We did get a smaller announcement this week, with the Desire 816.) But today, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, HTC's current (and very much still relevant) flagship is receiving a pretty major accolade by the GSMA, the group that puts on this little show that we call MWC.

Papyrus app

Now you can mark up docs easily with an S Pen

Papyrus is a promising note-taking app for Android that we first spotted at the Samsung Developer Conference, and they've finally reached the 1.0 milestone. Papyrus has been enjoying quite a bit of popularity in their beta period, having built up the core functions, but the latest update includes a premium feature for PDF importing. This means you can take documents sent to you by e-mail or elsewhere, and mark it up within the app. You can also export the final product as a PDF if you like.
