Blue HTC OneWe've seen plenty of the blue HTC One of late, thanks to various pre-release leaks of the unannounced color option. And now it seems U.S. carrier Sprint might be getting first dibs on the new, blue version of the phone, if a leaked internal screenshot is to be believed.

Great design, impressive specs and a solid price ... so where does it fall short?

Huawei is one of the dark-horse Android manufacturers, with a larger market share than you would guess (mostly outside the U.S.) and drastically better design and manufacturing chops than you'd expect from what most would call a "no name" manufacturer. The Chinese company has been making phones of all shapes, sizes and price points for many years now, but has just started moving into the higher-end smart phone game as of late where it sees room for growth.

Introduction

In Android-land, a good smartphone is more often than not a large smartphone. Screens of 5 inches and above dominate the high-end segment, meaning that anyone who wants the very best must learn to live with a handset of not-so-pocket-friendly proportions. However, there is a handful of smartphones that pack lots and lots of bang in a small, compact package – a combo sought after by a considerable fraction of users. And right now, the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini and the HTC One mini are among the best specimens fitting the description.

Huawei has just released the third version of its popular mid-range phone. The Huawei Honor 3, or Glory 3 in some markets, is now available, but so far only in Chinese markets.

huawei-honor-3-1

The Honor 3 first entered our radars back in May, when it was rumored to take on Samsung in the Chinese market, rivaling the Galaxy S 4. However, the specs that were later leaked revealed instead a mid-range phone, and it seems to have turned out that way indeed. The phone sports Huawei’s own quad-core K3V2 chip running at 1.5GHz and has 2 GB of RAM with 8 GB of internal storage, which is expandable with a microSD card. The Honor 3 runs Android 4.2.2 with Huawei’s Emotion UI on top.

Children aren’t the only ones getting special attention from the industry these days. Even those who are at the prime of their life and beyond need devices that are tailor fitted to address not only their needs, but also their habits and capacities. Enter Jitterbug Touch 2, the next iteration of the easy to use smartphone made by GreatCall, who specializes in products for aging consumers.

JitterbugTouch2-oblique

Jitterbug Touch 2 is designed for older people who are interested in transitioning to a smartphone. As such, the device offers no frills features and hardware. It has a full 4″ color touch screen, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of storage, a 5 megapixel rear camera, a 0.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and a battery that can last up to 13 days on standby. Weighing at just 0.3 pounds, the phone is definitely built for less powerful hands. But hardware is only part of the story, and a lesser one at that.

Satellite imagery and automated systems can only do so much in capturing relevant mapping data, such as open roads, walkways, and transportation lines. That is why Google launched its Ground Truth project to improve the reliability of Google Maps through a mixture of algorithms and good old human elbow grease.

map-hongkong-victoria-park

Unveiled last May, the Ground Truth initiative adds a factor of human labor in ensuring the accuracy of Google Maps data. It allows users to report a factual issue that they find on a local map. When there is a conflict between data that has been acquired by Google through various automated sources and data reported by anonymous users, Google will employ a specially trained Ground Truth operator to verify it by analyzing data gathered from Street View.

The Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo is as low as you can go with brand name Android smartphones. The super affordable, the ultra low end, call it as you wish, but can Android still look and work good on such a tiny and cheap phone?

The Galaxy Pocket Neo offers a small 3-inch display, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz on top, and it comes in both a single and dual SIM versions (we have the single SIM one for review). Compact and plastic, it looks more like a kid’s toy phone rather than a real gadget, but it is. It’s also all about compromise, but is its price low enough to justify this? Let’s explore.

Without a doubt, the Motorola DROID Ultra and Samsung Galaxy S4 are top tier smartphones from these respective companies, and carry the same $199.99 on-contract price from Verizon. But that is where most similarities end, as both devices have their own strong-points and short-comings, while trying to get your purchasing attention. The Galaxy S4 has been out for a couple of months now, and has a strong following, with an impressive 5” 1080x1920 display, 13MP camera, and quad-core processor. While the DROID Ultra has just been released, and continues the “DROID” branding, with Kevlar construction, 5” 720x1280 display, 10MP Clear Pixel camera, and uses the new Motorola X8 processor.
